Since January of this year 2016 I didn’t take any photography classes to use my reflex camera (Canon EOS 70D). My first shots were taken in Sweden during my Erasmus exchange (see the category Northern Europe to know more). I was lucky enough to find some photo enthusiasts during my stay who really helped me!
First Photography Class
Before I had my Reflex I was curious and were searching online tips and tricks. However, to create it’s necessary to understand the concepts of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Although, for a beginner these three values are hard to grasp and to put into action. Before this class I was like most people using the AV (Aperture Value) and TV (Time Value) modes.
Focus on Zoom’Up
This company is offering different photography classes, in French, by themes, such as “Aperture Priority and depth of field” (the course I took, a basic one). Above all, the real plus of Zoom’Up is that you can take a little test before booking a class to know your approximate level (link: here). If you want to see photos of previous classes you can also check out their blog.
Aperture Priority and depth of field
Usually when you are choosing a photography class it will be in small committee, 6 to 10 persons, of all ages and with different type of camera (hybrid, bridge, reflex). The “Aperture Priority and depth of field” class is really for beginners and people who wants to go further with their camera. The first 1h30 is dedicated to the explanation of basics such as : what’s aperture? How much is 100 ISO? Why the shutter speed is 1/1000 for sports shots? After that, you will go outside in a little park and practice (play with aperture, zoom and physical distance). Then you will took portrait photo in team. During the last hour the teacher, a professional, will do a little debrief and shared some feedback about the pictures.
I definitely recommend this class for beginners because the explanation of the basics is really clear and the teacher is here to help. Altogether, the small group, the passionate and pedagogue “teacher” really made this class accessible and interesting. Thus time flies and 4h30 can finally seems short! Lastly if it’s autumn or winter don’t forget to wore warm clothes.
